Roscoe’s Featured Friend of the Month: Poppyseed

back to blog

Independence Day always kicks off the beginning of July, but we have another reason to celebrate: it’s Poppyseed’s second adoptaversary! What a perfect reason to feature her as our newest Featured Friend of the Month! Poppyseed is a two year old mixed breed whose mother claims she is part fawn, part fox, and part bat. In reality, though, sweet little Poppyseed is a fun mix of Italian Greyhound, Chihuahua, Fox Terrier, Basenji, and Jack Russel. Talk about a family tree! And speaking of family, Poppyseed has been a part of the Roscoe’s clan for about eight months now, but they have been some of the best! We can’t wait for you to learn all about this cute bundle of pure joy!

Poppyseed dancing for treats!

Poppyseed and her mom first met the weekend of July 4, 2020, during the heat of the global pandemic. Poppy’s mom had been looking for a new puppy friend and decided to check out dogs on Petfinder.com. Before she knew it, Poppy’s mom was on the phone with an adopter counselor who told her if she could get to Vermont that Sunday, Poppyseed would be hers! So, naturally, Poppy’s mom dropped everything to drive the four hours there and back to meet her new baby. At the time, Poppyseed was only 3 pounds and was described to look like a small bat-like creature. However, Poppyseed was a sweet soul right from the start and her mom knew they were soulmates. After some typical puppy behavior like destroying pillows and getting into mischief, Poppyseed has settled in nicely and is now a full grown girl (albeit still only 13 pounds!)  who follows her mom everywhere. She’s quite a ham to be honest!

Despite her size, Poppyseed is a rugged athlete who spends her free time hiking, chasing squirrels, digging holes, and stalking anything that moves in the woods. Indeed, Poppyseed has a habit of chasing deer and will constantly sniff them out on walks or in her backyard. Despite being many times smaller, she will chase and bark at them every time. Perhaps she’s trying to chase down her ancestral roots? Poppy’s mom doesn’t always love her high prey drive, but one thing she’s always praised Poppyseed for is her loving and devoted personality. According to her mom, it doesn’t take much to get into Poppy’s inner circle and once you do, you’ll have a friend for life. Whether you’re gone five minutes, five hours, or five years, Poppyseed will always greet you as if it’s been decades since you’ve last met. And the best part? She always smiles while doing so! We’ve witnessed Poppyseed’s famous smile where she curls her lips back in such a happy expression and then sings high opera as she dances around you. You truly can feel the depths of her friendship when you’re around Poppyseed!

Poppyseed playing Queen of the Ramp with her friends!

Along with her love of people and zest for life, we admire Poppyseed because of her unique quirks and behaviors, such as broccoli stalks being her favorite food and her curious habit of always destroying Lambchop toys and leaving the scattered bits around the house. She likes to be carted around on pillows and has an interesting social life where everyone seems to know her and call her by name, but are not acquainted with her mom. We’re thinking secret agent maybe? Whatever her story, Poppyseed lightens everyone’s life and we feel lucky that she spends her time here at Roscoe’s with us. She’s a people-dog for sure and is always so excited to greet our staff whether they’re behind the front desk or out back in the playgroups. She will also dance for treats and play queen of the ramp with the other pups. She wrestles and tumbles and is always a big (or tiny!) ball of energy. If we know a dog wants to have a fun time, we put them in with Poppy!

We feel lucky to know a dog like Poppyseed and we can’t wait to see what the future brings for this little firecracker. We hope your life continues to be filled with wild deer, Lambchop toys, and crunchy broccoli stalks. Stay true to yourself, Poppy!
