Roscoe’s Featured Friend of the Month: Mookie

back to blog

Summer is baseball season, and what better way to celebrate than with New England’s own Red Sox star, Mookie Betts? Okay, so we don’t actually know Mr. Betts personally, but we do have the next best thing; Roscoe’s own star player and super cute stud Mookie Palmieri! Our Mookie is an adorable 2 year-old, Shar Pei / Labrador mix who joined the Roscoe’s team back in June of 2017 and he’s been hitting home runs ever since! He’s definitely major league material, and we can’t wait to share his story with you! So grab some peanuts and crackerjacks and read all about what makes Mookie so special!

Mookie was obviously born to be a star

Mookie was originally from Arkansas, the land of opportunity, where he dreamed of one day making it to the big leagues. Indeed for him, opportunity was right around the corner and while he was still just pup, Mookie traveled all the way to New Hampshire to look for his forever family who would help make his dreams come true. Luckily, Mookie’s new mom and dad were there, and when the three of them locked eyes it was love at first sight! Mookie’s mom recalls how he “had such a big personality since the day we took him home which made the transition so easy!” It looks like it was meant to be and, for Mookie, his journey to stardom was just beginning!

So what kind of lifestyle does a star athlete live anyway? Well for Mookie, or Mr. Mookie Butts as he’s known professionally, it’s important for him to keep up his physique while also setting some time aside for rest and relaxation. His days usually consist of taking long runs on the beach and playing frisbee where he can work out his legs and upper body, then heading home to lay in the sun where he can catch up with his squirrel friends in the backyard. And of course any athlete needs a good, hearty diet, so Mookie always makes sure to eat his favorite protein-rick snack of freeze-dried venison. (Our sources tell us that he has also been spotted snacking on the occasional, discarded pizza crust, but we won’t tell if you won’t!) Being as famous as he is, Mookie also has to deal with the ever-present and annoying pup-arazzi who are always looking to sniff out a good story. Luckily for them, Mookie is easy-going and friendly with everyone, so he doesn’t mind the constant attention. Plus, he likes to showoff his wiggly butt and impressive snaggletooth; two traits which, back in 2018, won him the honorary title of “Cutest Canine” in Animal Athletes Magazine. Yes it’s the good life for Mookie who, despite all his fame, never lets it go to his head!

Of course, what’s a star athlete without his fans? We like to think that, here at Roscoe’s, we’re his biggest! Mookie always makes time for us, and is more than willing to play a good game of catch with his doggy pals. He can usually be found roughing it up with the big boys out in center field, chasing down balls, wrestling, and then shooting the breeze around the water bowl. His human friends also like to swarm him to take many pictures and usually convince him to show off his impressive moves for the camera. It seems like wherever he goes Mookie makes friends, and we’re just happy that he chose us as his number one team! We love you Mookie Butts!

The resemblance is uncanny

“Mookie is my absolute favorite dog ever! His good looks, playful personality, kind demeanor and the fact that he’s named after my favorite ball player definitely make me Mookie’s number one fan! Every time he enters my group or I see him strutting down the aisle, I call his name very loudly and his butt immediately starts to wiggle! He also gives me the sweetest, little kisses and I literally cannot get over how adorable his snaggletooth and little bat ears are. I could go on but let’s just say I love everything about Mookie and I’m so happy I get to play with him every day!” -Chelsea Thompson, Playgroup Supervisor
